Mission Statement

Enriching life through music, the Ulster Orchestra’s mission statement, is a clear articulation of the goals and the dreams of the Orchestra, shaping its strategies and determining its day-to-day operations.

JoAnn Falletta

Praised by The Washington Post as having “Toscanini’s tight control over ensemble, Walter’s affectionate balancing of inner voices, Stokowski’s gutsy showmanship, and a controlled frenzy worthy of Bernstein,” JoAnn Falletta has earned a reputation as a vibrant ambassador for music and an inspiring artistic leader.

In addition to her appointment as Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in May 2011, Maestro Falletta - who has been  described by The New York Times as ‘one of the finest conductors of her generation’ - serves as the Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in the United States and was recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. She is also Artistic Advisor to the newly formed Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.

Ms Falletta has been invited to guest conduct many of the world’s finest symphony orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony and the National Symphony.

She has also presented over 100 world premieres. American Record Guide recently hailed her “ingenious programming” and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has honoured her as a “leading force for the music of our time.”

Her discography includes over 60 titles. Under her direction, the Buffalo Philharmonic returned to recording, releasing 12 discs on the NAXOS label over the course of 10 years, with nine Grammy nominations in the past five years and two Grammy Awards.
She serves on the United States’ National Council on the Arts, which a Presidential appointment and is the recipient of many of the most prestigious conducting awards.

Ms Falletta received her undergraduate degree from the Mannes School, and her master’s and doctorate degrees from Juilliard.
