Glinka Overture: Ruslan and Lyudmila Mozart Piano Concerto No.26, Coronation Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5
Glinka was the first distinctively Russian composer and this opera overture celebrates the engagement banquet of Pushkin’s characters. Mozart used his Concerto No.26, unsuccessfully, to curry favour with the new Austrian Emperor, Leopold, in Frankfurt during the 1790 coronation festivities. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony, with its great orchestral sounds, brings the season to an end on, for him, a happy note.
