Wagner features twice in tonight’s concert. His overture to The Mastersingers of Nuremburg is a marvellous curtainraiser, with its stately opening, great tunes and grand ending.

As for his other ‘appearance’, it’s in the nickname given to Bruckner’s Third Symphony, his so–called ‘Wagner’ symphony, which Bruckner dedicated to the great man.

Between these two works the young Dutch violinist, Liza Ferschtmann, makes her début with the UO playing Sibelius’ highly virtuosic Violin Concerto.
