Mozart Symphony No.31 in D, K.297 Paris Britten Diversions for piano (left–hand) and orchestra Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 Pathétique
7 pm Free pre–concert talk with Finghin Collins
Finghin Collins plays Britten’s Diversions, originally commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, a fine concert pianist himself who lost his right arm during the First World War and was determined to continue his career as a soloist.
Alongside Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, a towering work in the Russian symphonic repertoire, Britten’s piece displays with aplomb what can be achieved when the pianist is faced with such a challenge. Mozart’s Paris symphony provides an effervescent opening to the evening.
